Comments

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Mustangs' indoor track and field season was brought to a close this weekend as seven individuals competed at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championship. Two Mustangs collected All-American awards for their performances. Kathryn Vander Poel (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) and Jon Andersen (SR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) were named All-Americans in the Women's 800 Meters and Men's 3000 Meter Race Walk respectively.

Rachel Gadient (JR/Anamosa, Iowa) was the first to compete for the Mustangs on Thursday, Feb. 28 in the Pentathlon. Gadient finished 13th of 16 with 3150 points. The Women's 4x800 Relay Team of Andrea Ertz (JR/Central City, Iowa), McKenna Johnson (SO/Asbury, Iowa), Vanessa Cortes (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.), and Vander Poel finished the preliminaries in 12th place with a time of 9:36.80, just missing the cut to compete in the finals. In the 1000 Meter Preliminaries, Ertz ran a time of 3:07.42. Gadient also competed in the high jump finishing in a tie for 25th place with a mark 1.57m. Rounding out the competition was Vander Poel in the 800 Meters with a fifth-place finish and a personal-best time of 2:16.39. This performance by Vander Poel breaks the previous school record with her name on it by over a second.

Two Mustangs on the men's side competed. Colton Forster (SR/Marion, Iowa) ran a time of 15:15.65 in the 5000 Meter Preliminaries good enough for 15th place, but came up just short and did not advance to the finals. In the 3000 Meter Race Walk, Andersen finished in fifth place with a time of personal-best time of 13:35.50.

With the conclusion of the indoor season, the Mustangs will open their outdoor track and field season Friday, March 15 and Saturday, March 16 at the Rhodes Invite in Memphis, Tenn.
