[Track & Field] Women Crowned Champions, Men Fourth at Mustang Open

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Mustangs hosted the Mustang Open at the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex on Saturday. The women finished atop the leaderboard while the men placed fourth. Strong individual performances in multiple events propelled the Mustangs to favorable finishes at their home meet.

Jon Andersen (SR/Cedar Rapids, Iowa) placed first in the 5000 Meter Race Walk with a personal best and school record time of 24:02, which qualified him for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships under the "B" Standard. Luke Nickelson (JR/Nipomo, Calif) took home two first place finishes with a personal best mark of 1.92m in the High Jump and 6.94m in the Long Jump. On the women's side, Kathryn Vander Poel (SR/Bakersfield, Calif.) placed first in the 800 Meters (2:20.05) and won the 1500 Meters with a personal best time of 4:50.52. In the 5000 Meters, Vanessa Cortes (JR/Bakersfield, Calif.) won with a personal best time of 18:26.03. McKenna Johnson (SO/Asbury, Iowa) finished first in the 3000 Steeplechase in 11:42.45, which was a personal best for her.
